When you turn on the ignition the pump should run for 10 seconds then stop. You can hear it do this.

Yea the car starts just about with a little acceleration then chugss and sthen stalls after about 3 seconds

 

A diagnostic tool should pick up codes which must be there. A new fuel filter may be a good idea.
If you decide to change the fuel filter look it up on here as there are some pitfalls.

 

thanks I have actually changed that the other day with no luck. Just had a check under the back seat and had a listen , when turning the ignition on I can humming noise and diesel whoosing away so just be ok and working.

Yes it was , I changed It last years last, and then again to see if it would sort the problem out .

 

I would humbly suggest that this needs the attention of a good Jag tech. I don't think correspondence on a forum is going to fix this. But pleased to be wrong.

As Gav say's above you really need a proper diagnostic done, as you may cause more damage trying to find it.
At the moment you have no idea of what is causing the problem, it could be many things, and easily made worse.
