The spare key fob not working at all

Guys, I have tried to find an older thread about this issue but with no significant results...so here it goes- Just checked my spare key fob today, after receiving a message "Smart key battery low" on the dash(using the main one). Just wanted to make sure that I have a spare working one, before replacing the battery(if any following problems with it). And what a surprise-it is not functioning at all-not starting the car(not recognized when inside), not opening/closing the car, nothing, like it is not from this vehicle. Battery was replaced-same outcome. So now I'm quite reluctant to replace the almost empty battery on the key fob I use usually, since i may find myself without any means of starting the car. The local dealer is absolutely useless, so a visit there should be my last resort. Is there any way to reset my spare key? I have tried to dock it-no result.
The car in question is the one in the signature. Thanks in advance!

Alex,

there are batteries and there are batteries, you don't say the source but I would try a decent brand from reputable source, by that I mean a place where you would think they have high turn over and are not sat on the shelves for weeks on end.

The battery's should all have an expiry date on them, you want to get something with 3 years left.

A key fob with a flat battery will still enable starting the car by putting the fob in the docking slot, the one with the low battery which seems about to pack up. All the info is in the handbook.

Facelift. No docking port.

Cheers Guys! Will renew the battery with a proper one(the one in place in not a branded one indeed) first thing tomorrow. Will report the result.
P.S. The dealer asked me on the phone today: "Is the engine transverse or longitudinal?" Right after: "Supercharged diesel or petrol?" Looks like I'm my own in this one :)

Yep, I'm kinda... screwed. Even with "Duracel"- Long life supa-dupa battery it is not functioning at all. I've tried it directly on the circuit board(to eliminate the clearance possibility when in the fob), still the same. It is like it is not from this car(or is it?). I've just checked the blade and what a surprise- the cutting is quite different. Guess I'm having a dull spare key... Well, now I have to load myself up with a lot of patience and visit my darn dealer...

P.S. I need this-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld86wViAHYA so badly

Alex,

I take it the dealer you purchased the vehicle from supplied both sets of keys? If that's the case chuck the duff one back at him and get him to sort it out - Enquire if he has another disgruntled XF owner who only has one key working my bet is they have been mixed up.

Has the change of battery cured the original fault with the working key fob?

You are a mind reader, Bethpage! :)) Just got in touch with them, waiting for reply(they are not local). They had another Jag for sale indeed, but an XKR. Not sure if it is the same key fob though. Anyhow I will wait for the reply until visiting the local Jag "specialists". As for the low battery message- I was reluctant to renew it until I sort the issue with the spare one, just in case if it fail also...But yeah, it will eventually be out of battery. So will renew it tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed.

An old thread, but with some useful(I hope) update. No luck with the dealer that sold me the car but anyway, just ordered a new key fob from my local dealer. I was aware that already programmed fob will not be easily re-programmed by the dealer(I presume an equipment issue) but I gave it a shot. And guess what-it worked. The dealer was able to re-program it to my car with their original Jaguar equipment. Now I own a set of three fobs :) A new one cut my budget by 240 Euro...At least they did not charged me for setting up my own spare fob. :)
P.S. The battery renewal fixed the fault with the original fob
