Park Brake Fault

I drove up to Ipswich this morning and after leaving a favourite roundabout in a 'spirited' manner I had the message "Park Brake Fault"on the dash and the cruise control would not engage.

Popped into the dealer here who advised it shouldn't be dangerous to drive. I know my rear pads are getting really low and I think the car uses the rear to control stability and active cruise too.

I then popped out in the car at lunch time and the message has gone. I've still booked it in to Lancaster in Reading to have the rear pads replaced on Wednesday morning when I get back though.

I had the same message and once i turned the car off and on again it went. It was (so i'm told by the dealer) due to me releasing the EPB to late when starting off. I dont like letteing it auto-release as i think it puts extra wear on the rear pads. I must have released it and hit the gas to soon and confused it.

Might be totally wrong here, but others got electronic warnings after having pressed the brake and the accelerator simultaniously (by accidend of course:rolleyes:).
This resets after a while and the reading goes .. no further problems. Any possibility you might have done that Ash??
Releasing the park brake late is the same thing k44ent .. but how the hell does this work. I thought it releases as soon as you touch the acc. pedal:confused:

I had the same message once after allowing one of the rear wheel to spin a little then when stopped tried to apply the epb. Parked up and next time it was gone never to return.

As for the epb - I too rarely allow it to autorelease as imho it's bound to lead to premature pad wear. You can feel the car pull agains the pads as they are releasing. It's with good reason rear pads on XF's have such a short life.

I have had this a few times now, and as its supposed to release as soon as you put the car into gear, its something I want to get sorted out. Twice yesterday :( its annoying. Lets see what the dealer says. I'm trying to get all the warranty issues sorted before it runs out in December.

See page 146 of the manual,

If the parking brake is applied while D or R are selected, applying the throttle will automatically release the parking brake.

The parking brake is also released when the gear selector is moved from the P position.

I.e. selecting a gear

Foot on brake select D from P - if I then lift off the brake the car will creep forward with no press of the throttle.
Ash - are you saying that your car does not move until you release the park brake manually or press the throttle?

Had a opportunity to check my EPB as curiosity got the better of me.
I see 3 conditions:

I) Pull up to a stop in D, apply the EBB and it releases only when you press the accelerator - as we all know and expect.

Put the car in P apply EPB and release footbrake.

II) Apply footbrake and engage R and the EPB releases immediately. Car will creep as soon as you release the footbrake. (Odd -so I guess it only auto releases going forward)
III) Apply footbrake and engage D it remains on until you release the footbrake and press accelerator.

I've just tried all combinations and it only releases (without pressing the loud pedal of course) when going from P to R. Does not release when going from N to R or N to D or from R through N to D if applied while in R. Going from P to D does of course release because it has gone P to R first.

Same as mine then. Wonder why the difference in D and R with one releasing and not the other. I could guess at many but nothing seems obvious.

I did wonder if there was a problem to release in reverse, but if that was so then going from N to R should release it in the same way as P to R. As our US cousins would say "go figure".
But then there are plenty of other odd-ball things in the UI, so I guess one shouldn't be too surprised!

Seems I've been pressing the EPB when I didn't need to. From P with the EPB on I put my foot on the brake pedal, select D and the release the footbrake. the car creeps forward. I could have sworn that it would be held on the EPB. I wonder if that was what my XJR used to do and I've gotten so used to it.

Well the damn light came on again yesterday while driving so its off to the dealer next week to have it fixed. Its a near every other day occurance now and it comes on while cruising so its not a disengagement problem from pulling away.

I suspect a faulty cable.

I will keep you informed.
