Hi,

Just wanted to say hello to one and all.
I've been seriously contemplating the following purchase;

- 2012 Jaguar XJ 3.0d V6 Premium Luxury 4dr Auto SALOON Diesel Automatic

It has done 34k miles from new with one owner/fsh etc and is up for sale for 15k.

Could anyone tell me please if this is a good buy as a daily driver (I'm giving up a company car and taking extra on my salary). I expect to cover around 5-10k miles a year.

I've looked at the usual Ford Mondeos but fancy something different to what is usually seen on the roads.

Am I setting myself up for a big fall in terms of servicing/running costs?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi and welcome, if you have been used to a company car then I feel that any car where you have to start paying for servicing and repairs is going to sting a bit, as with any make if you find a good independent it will help a lot, you will avoid the JAT (Jaguar Added Tax). Phil

Hello Guy. Welcome to the forum!
The 3-litre V6 diesel XJ (pre 2016) is a great daily driver. You'll get around 32mpg around town. I've just done a 600-mile business trip in mine and got 46mpg with mostly motorway cruising but also quite a bit of town driving.
At £15k for a car that has only 34k miles on it, it seems a good buy.

There was a subtle change to the engine layout in 2016 which makes the later diesel XJs a little problematic for short-journey ownership.

Congrats on your proposed new/old car.

They aren’t really any more expensive to run than anything else.

Make sure the cambelt has been changed (year 7), fuel pump belt (year 7) and the accessory belt (year 10).

Front suspension bushes seem to be an age-related thing on this car, but that’s just wear and tear.

And get ready for one or more door lock failure.

Above all, find a good local Jag indy.

Oh, and check it isn’t still on the original tyres, as they will be getting a bit old now at 10 years (check the 4-digit DOT code on the tyre sidewall: first two numbers are the production week, and second two numbers are the production year).

Would 5-10k miles a year make the 3.0 V6 supercharged an option?

Dangit, you’ve got me there.

The 3.0S came in from MY13, so I guess that’s from Sep12?

That one you’ve found is in the best interior/exterior colour combo as well. Absolute beauty.

Before that you could have the 3.0D, the 5.0 NA, or the 5.0S (Supersport only, as the XJR didn’t exist then).

MY12 was the last that the 5.0 NA was available: https://autocatalogarchive.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Jaguar-XJ-2012-UK.pdf
