XJ FOR SALE……OR MIBEEZ NOT.

1133 Views 48 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  BigKev
2014…….23k miles……Timing belt and watter pump done 11/2022………back seat never been used.

So why am I thinking of selling the car I always dreamt of owning…? ULEZ. If I ever wish to drive in the inner sancti of my home toon, Glesga, both my wife’s car and mine get us a wee £60.00 fine after June. I have been offered a Lexus UX Hybrid of a ridiculously high spec., and 4WD to boot.

I am truly in a dilemmafication, but put this on here for two reasons. If anyone has any interest in the car, should I sell it, please register your interest by pm. Haven’t even checked its value….!

Secondly…….Cutlea…..John OBC……Stats…..Gav……Jamesy……Stevie7 even……Phil……Ennybugger….
PLEASE HELP ME TALK ME OUT OF THIS…..LOL….!

Keep the XJ and use public transport/ taxi/horse/walk into Glasgow.

We've had a ULEZ in Bristol since November and I've avoided it ever since.

If I really need to go into central Bristol I'll use the park and ride.

One month to go, Jay, and the infrastructure of public transport to offset the ULEZ crap is in its infancy. Apart from our catapult city of Eddingbureau of course, with its hundreds of millions of overspent on fekn tram system.

My Euro5-engined XJ is also non-compliant with the Birmingham ULEZ and so on the very rare occasions I need to go into Brum, I take the train.
@BigKev If you sell your XJ, every time you see one will give you a knot in yer tummy and feelings of almost unbearable regret.

Kev, it’s a keeper like others have said use a park and ride, Edinburgh‘s transport system is second to none.
How many times do you actually have to go to the weege/embra?
I’ll toot ma horn to you when you‘re on the bus ;)

There are plenty of places without a ULEZ to visit.

Ooof Kev mins.

That penalty rate in Scotland LEZs looks pretty harsh. If I’m reading it right, it’s £30 for the first offence, then £60 for the second, then £120, £240 and then £480 (and capped at that level) for each visit to the same LEZ?

The charges here are pretty low in comparison, and on the rare occasion that I head into a LEZ, I just pay the fee (£9 for Bristol), and suck it up as one of those marginal costs of motoring - as it’s a lot cheaper than getting a compliant car.

So I guess it depends on how often you will head into Glasgow?

At those Scotteesh fine levels I would maybe do it once and pay £30. Any more than that, then I’d drive to somewhere and get park & ride, or get the train for the last leg.

But I would still keep the mighty XJ.

You'd be a fool to sell it, it's your pride and joy, you'd really, really, regret it. Just how often did you need to drive in Glasgow? If no public transport and you just have to be there, take a cab or Uber. How much would this cost you, compared to the heartache of selling the motor? Oh and the Lexus UX is ugly. Mega ugly, in comparison to your Jaaaaaaag.

Wilf, I think just maybe people want cars that actually make it to the destination - and don't drip oil all over their driveway. though the Stag is a lovely car.

I’m not sure what’s made me think of this, but if Kev stuffed a b a n a n a up the tailpipe, to make the car stall, would he still have to pay the LEZ fine when the AA tow him to his destination in Glasgae or would only the tow truck need to be LEZ compliant?

OOh - very harsh. I'll have you know that Buttercup doesn't drip oil all over the drive, and neither has she ever failed to reach her destination. :p

I wouldn't sell it for a variety of reasons:
  1. It's your pride & joy, don't let Glasgow Greedy Council take that away from you
  2. They've installed a LEZ far too late in the day and Glasgow is a ghost town anyway. I suspect there's an ulterior motive behind this, perhaps to be changed to police something like the 15/20 minute cities, congestion or climate zone etc, whereby all cars will be liable.
  3. The city centre within the LEZ is a dump now and barely worth visiting.
  4. You can always part just outside the zone at Bridge Street etc and jump on our tiny tube into the city centre.
  5. If you can get a Blue Badge for you or a passenger then I believe you can be exempt.
  6. Underline point 3.
  7. They have called it an LEZ but I suspect in the near future they will stick the letter "U" before it and shaft you again.
  8. Double underline point 3.
  9. It's terrible to drive in now with a multitude of bus gates, one-ways, paved areas etc.

Or buy the V8 version and grin all day long :D

Troubles of the mind Kev.

For the amount of times you visit the big smoke from the clean air of the Highlands, IMHO I'd be keeping the big cat.

Park and ride or train into Central Glasgow. There are choices.

The other choice is to get, as said by others, a l XJR-575. There's a couple on Autotrader. One is silly money, but already been reduced in price, and it's also in black.

Also a Cat S one in Leicester- but that would need a thoroughly in-depth examination before buying.

There are also a few older 550PS XJRs on sale.

Would I (in theory) give up a diesel XJ because of the dictates of city that I don't visit that often? No chance!!
