Whaling noise coming from engine?

Hi guys,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place. I have a 64 plate Jaguar XF S. Today I got a ‘low coolant level’ warning - okay, fine. I lifted the bonnet while running to see if there was any immediate leakage from pipes etc and seen nothing. However, the engine is now making an ongoing whine or whaling noise when idle. It goes up and down in tone as if it’s a rotational cycle.

I’m just looking to see if there are any hints or immediate suggestions on what it may be?

Thanks in advance

Craig

Hard to diagnose over a forum but my first thoughts are a bearing either on alternator or water pump tensioner etc

You said the low coolant warning had shown... That would be my first port of call (excuse the whaling pun).

I assume you've checked the coolant level and it's ok?

If it's low on coolant and it's getting hot, it'll be running the radiator fan on full speed to try and cool it.

My first thoughts are a water pump issue.
