I have only had this car a few weeks and am not sure what is 'normal' behaviour from the temperature gauge. I am still within the used car warranty period it came with so want to get it fixed on warranty if there is anything wrong.
My temperature gauge goes from cold to out of the blue zone in about 5 minutes, the first line in about another 5 and the mid-line in about a further 5 minutes normal driving which I understand is fairly normal and in line with other cars I have had. After that it behaves somewhat erratically. It never goes above the mid-line but can drop for no apparent reason to any point between the first line and the mid-line, and it can do this drop in apparent temperature within 30 seconds and stay there for a few minutes or seconds before moving again up or down but always between these 2 lines. The thermostat is not therefore either stuck permanently open or closed, but I have not seen this behaviour on other cars which have always stayed very close to the mid-line on the gauge. There are no fault messages or lights associated with these movements in the gauge, and the car still seems to drive OK throughout. I have checked the diagnostic port with a cheap ebay obd2 reader and there are no old DTC codes recorded.
There are no numbers on the gauge so I have no idea how much the indicated temperature is varying between these 2 lines. Is this normal behaviour for the temperature gauge on this model/engine? and if not, is it likely an intermittent thermostat fault, temperature sensor fault or gauge fault?
