Anyone who needs a new battery and gets a quote of £300 from a dealer to fit and replace it should have a read below.

The official battery sold to you by Jaguar will cost approximately £191 with the rest of the quote for fitting.

The auxiliary battery on mine (2012 facelift) is the small secondary battery in the boot just along from the main large battery. It's held in place with a covering bracket with 2 sizes 10 bolts and then the standard battery post bolts which are also size 10. It takes about 5 mins to remove this battery.....

From my research, I found that the battery is an Exide EK151 model. This tends to retail from around 50-60 pounds on the internet but I found it online here:-
Home - BBL Batteries

I phoned them up and had one delivered the next day for the total amount of £40.20
I was surprised to find that when opening the package it was exactly the same as the official Jaguar part, including the stickers. I have attached a picture of both the original and new batteries side by side. The new one has the label EK151 on it.

I fitted the battery and almost immediately the stop/start began to work. No additional work was needed at all.

I hope this helps anyone avoid being ripped off by the dealer for this part.

see I was told a stop start battery would have to be programmed into car, apparently not true
It's one of the commonest misconceptions about our cars. The dealers all tell you the same thing.
The truth is that they can tell the system the size of the battery from the outset, but over the course of a few days the system will automatically let the battery drain down and relearn the capacity.

It's something which the system does on a regular basis anyway as batteries (as we know) degrade over time.

ive been watching my 2, ie the big one and small one, I started to take readings from both before charging and after charging, for instance. the big one was 12.2 before charging months ago, had it on trickle charge for 2 days after that I got a reading of 12.7 now a normal battery would have gave me a reading off over that, more like 13.4 so a bit of a mystery, I hear you lot saying but its feeding the small one. no it aint, I took readings from it to at same time;)

the last time I charged them , big one was at 12.4 small one was 13.8 it should be 14v;) after trickle charging the big one for 24hrs it gave a reading of 12.8 were as the small one was still 13.8 so I charged it for a couple of hours it then read 14v. see what I mean by blind spot IE not much info on them:rolleyes:

Hi tark.

Last month I fitted a Varta H3 019 to my 2010 XFR.
It's a higher rating than the original at 100ah. CCA 830A. It is a wet cell type.
Dimensions (including battery terminals): 353L x 175W x 190H (mm).

From Topix I read that you can change from a wet cell to an AGM, but not the other way round.

I got the battery from Tayna Batteries on the Bay, delivered to my door.

The battery monitoring system reset itself after a couple of stop start cycles too, so no worries there. Topix also mentions that it will do that.

I'm sure I read that snow mode button increases the alternator charge, I wonder if this could be of use if doing lots of short journeys?
Not one I've heard and tbh I'd be surprised as th e BMS takes care of this for all conditions

Perhaps it's in the manual but I can't remember where I read or saw it, I should have said Winter Mode as well but same thing. I'm sure it was because in winter the battery drains faster due to the cold so the charging rate was increase. 14.7V rings a bell instead of the usual 14.2-5V. Makes sense I guess, actually quite clever!

On two of my XF's the variable output from the alternator was 13-15 odd volts. Gone are the days where it's a constant 14.7v....

Funny you say that because I've got one of those simple voltmeters which plugs into the 12V socket and I noticed that my voltage can often go well up in the 14's, sometimes hitting 15V but have been doing a bit of burying my head in the sand as I really don't want to think about an alternator problem lol Of course I'm not sure how accurate this little device is but it's been a good enough match in the past with my multimeter so I'm assuming it's ok.

Anyway, I can't find it. Perhaps it was a different car I'm thinking of but I've also just checked myself using the voltmeter and nothing changes when pressing the button so safe to assume I'm talking bollox lol

Yeah sounds ok, like I say it's normal for the alternator to deliver 15+V

You can check the voltage on your dash (if you've an x250 classic, not sure about FL though) by putting the car into into engineering mode.
