Hi guys,

I will replace my gateway module soon. Just waiting for raising temperatures...
My current GWM is somehow corrupted and MoJo recommended replacing it while it is still working. Not waiting for its dead. I bought a new original one via a Jaguar dealer verified with my VIN that it's the right one.

Since the GWM is important for the "clearance to start", I don't want to risk "keys not found..." and all the other good known stuff. So, it might be a good idea to ask, if anybody replaced the GWM via SDD before.

I would follow this routine:
  • leave the old GWM plugged in
  • start a SDD session
  • use the service function <Configure new modules - gateway module>
  • I guess during this routine SDD will ask to change the module at a certain point. Am I right?
  • Unplug the old GWM and connect the new GWM
  • Follow the SDD routine

I guess after the last step the routine will start another routine for checking & re-programming other modules like the KVM, BCM and some others. I saw this during the routine of configuring the KVM as new module.
But during this KVM routine SDD didn't ask for replacing the existing module (hardware).
So, I'm not sure if the routine written above is the right one. Maybe I have to replace the GWM first and then start the SDD session with the GWM routine.

I know, I could have sent MoJo a PM. But this might be interesting for others too. So I decided to ask the forum.
I'm not in a hurry with this repair.

Hi Dirk, I’m a novice using SDD, but my thoughts are you replace the GWM first then fire up SDD to tell the car it has a new one…

I'd be in agreement with that, I don't think changing any modules which are powered/live would be a good thing. I'd have thought you'd fully power the car down, replace the unit, power back up and run the sequence.

I really would like to power down and disconnect the batteries ....but after my last session with MoJo, I wouldn't. I don't want to have this "No ignition at all" again. But you are both right, I will power down, wait for quiescent current around 20 mA and replace the GWM first.

What was the reason for the change of Gateway module. Was it a stop/start issue? I'm pretty sure that the GWM can be replaced without the need to reprogram, but I might be incorrect...think it's just a standalone module.
If it's a stop start issue there may be nothing wrong with the GWM. On the Autel AP200 scanner there was a diagnostic routine which could clear issues with the GWM. I had this issue on a Land Rover Discovery which is basically the same system. The garage was unable to clear the problem and advized a trip to dealer, but the Autel managed to clear it. Just some info...hope you sort it.

Thanks for sharing your information. Always interesting to gather more information. I didn't change it yet. Just bought the spare part last year and plan to change it end of March. When it's a little bit warmer outside....in case something goes wrong and I need more time to fix it
The trigger to change it, is the fault U0300 and U3000 shown in the DTC screenshot in my first post. It's present since nearly 2 years. I think I caused this on my own during changing the two batteries (starter+start/stop) in March 2021. Didn't know and follow the rules for changing batteries. Had the "car won't lock via fob" issue. Fixed it with the help of this forum.
June 2022 I had to exchange the alternator and followed all rules to disconnect the batteries first. After the exchange the car didn't recognize my keys. No ignition at all. With the glorious help of MoJo from this forum (he re-programmed KVM, BCM and a few other modules via teamviewer) the Jag was fully functional afterwards. BCM and KVM were not bricked. Luckily. MoJo saw the issue with the GWM and told me to get a new GWM. The EEPROM of my current GWM is somehow damaged. Really seems to be an EEPROM hardware issue. Might be damaged during the battery change. Might just be bad luck with this IC. Normally a software incompatibility could be fixed be re-programming. MoJo did this and it didn't fix the issue. If a technician with such an experience like MoJo's gives me the advice to change this GWM as long as it is still alive, I will follow his advice ;) . That's the simple reason for the planned exchange. But the Autel might have been an action to try before buying a new GWM. I only have to find a Autel user in my area. My Indy uses a Gutmann system.

Cheers

Sounds like you have good advice there....should be easy to change...it's just behind the right cover in the boot I believe. I don't think it's common for them to go wrong so hope it solves your particular issue.

Good luck! And give MoJo my love :D.
Would be interesting for me to know, if you have the same issue with the GWM. Please let me know your result :)

@sandmaennle

SDD will let you know what to do. For instance, when you replace PCM, you should have the old one in first before starting the procedure as it has to "inhale" the old information and put it into the new module.

I can't remember which way round it is for a GWM on a X250 but I generally tend to replace modules, then start the procedure.

Good luck Dirk!

Thanks @MoJo88 for the hint ! I will first try it with an initial SDD session with the old GWM first and see what SDD tells me to do. If won't tell me to remove the old one and plug in the new one, I know I can take the second way to change the GWM while the Jag is sleeping and start a SDD session after the exchange.

I believe it won't be a good idea to exchange the GWM while the Jag is awake. I guess the BCM is communicating permanently with the GWM.
