Here's a graphic example what happens when the Pedestrian Protection System deploys for no reason...

2010 build XF 5.0L, the PPS deployed, you can see there is absolutely no damage to the rest of the vehicle (i.e. there was no impact / crash)

The vehicle has been written off by the insurance company, why it's ended up at the salvage auction.

Here are the pictures uploaded to the forum, since the auction listing will eventually disappear.

An Australian XF owner on another forum reported this happened to him (this is not his car though, his was a 2008, this one a 2010) so at least two cases in Australia now. The first case the owner reported Jaguar wanted $3200 to replace the airbags and hinges. Obviously this particular car copped more damage than that or there is something else going on with the insurer (new for old replacement? but the car is too old...).

Figured i'd post this since some people were asking "why would you disable the PPS" ? well here's your answer...

Seems odd overall - if the replacement of parts is $3200, and labour, say, double this again (which would be incredible), it's still much less than the agreed value of the car. There might be more than a bonnet to fix - there's no mileage recorded, so either no keys or flat battery: maybe drivetrain/engine problems, too. Or possibly the previous owner disputed the repair cost, or had some misfortune (in repayments, or something else).

It's a repairable write-off, so someone will get a bargain when it is finally auctioned. Even if just for parts. Anyone in Melbourne in mid-October?

If it was an XFR I'd be all over it like a fat kid with icecream, but it's not so someone else can have it.

Sure would like to know the whole story behind it though...

I can see definite damage to the left front, and a hint of damage to the bottom left of the rear valance (which if there is might just be a consequence of a frontal impact, the valance is not clipped in all that tightly).
Looks to me like there was an impact, but not enough to set off any interior airbag(s).

The PPS system is basically two accelerometers/impact sensors attached to the front bumper, two bonnet air bags, a control box and a couple of firing pins in the hinges. You could take the main components out but I suspect you will end up with a permanent warning in the display. The vehicle is delivered to the dealers with the system inhibited and is activated during the PDI.

I've had mine switched off. Via a tweak to the CCF done with the SDD software. No mechanical or physical changes and no warnings or error codes.

Yes, with SDD. Unsure it can be while in fired mode though. Usually needs new air bags, hinges, sometimes bonnet, and PPS module replaced and programmed.

Jaguar System Driven Diagnostics, you‘d need someone with a knowledge on how to do this though.
