Thanks OBC John!
You inspired me to look around and I found a 2008-2009 XF workshop manual, and it doesn't contain appear to contain all this detail. Thanks for sharing it. It does, however, have a diagram and a load of information about the communication between the BMS module, battery, generator/regulator and other bits, including the following around p.2506 (depending on your version of the pdf):

If a new battery is fitted, the battery monitoring system module will require re-calibration using a Jaguar approved diagnostic system. Replacement of the battery monitoring system module requires no action as the module will re-calibrate automatically.
So it's totally open to interpretation... I could let the battery drain a bit so the calibration kicks in, or I could do nothing and wait for recalibration "periodically", or I could find out how to re-calibrate the EBS, which may or may not have been done. And I could also go back to the garage to get the correct battery put in which would also require recalibration.

Hopefully one or all of these will get my parking brake working...... 馃檨

Third option: let us know where you're located and you may find there's a local fm with a gizmo to reset the bsm.

That would be spectacularly helpful, if someone is around! Tomorrow I'm in Chesham (Buckinghamshire), then in Kentish Town (N5), and in August I'm in Ilford, Essex. My MOT is due mid August so I need to sort it one way or another by then or I won't be able to drive home to France.

Ironically, there is a JLR specialist 5 minutes from my house there...

Good grief. Are you towing a caravan?
Let's see if anyone can help. A bit far for me in West Midlands.

Hi MitKat. I've a hardly used Bosch battery that needs a home, 95Ah and 850CCA, if you're anywhere close to me, Ripley in Derbyshire.

Battery for sale

I've also got iCarsoft so we can fit the battery and reset the BMS.

Thank you, but I doubt I'll be able to get up to Derbyshire - I have a very tight schedule and an EPB that may need parts. I appreciate the offer though.

I'm in Thame on the Oxon and Bucks border. Happy to do you a BMS reset if you're able to get to me?

Update: Yesterday I was able to take my car to a Jag specialist in Edgware, North London, who fitted me in for a diagnostic.

He plugged in the computer, cleared the error relating to the EPB, tested the brake, and no error came up despite the brake not applying. As a result he thought it might only be the cable (a motor problem would flag instantly, apparently) and had time to put the car on the ramp.

Unfortunately the cable from the EPB motor to the brake - which should have some tension - was very loose. That can't be simply replaced, so it's a new motor for me which will be fitted in 10 days or so. Expensive, but necessary.

I have to say that the service has been great so far and Paul (who runs the place) seems very knowledgeable, thorough, and experienced. I don't know if I'm allowed to post details of garages on here but I would recommend them, based on my experience so far 馃檪

Good that you've found the problem, feel free to post further details of the garage as it could be useful to others in the future. (y)
