Funnily enough, I use my previous LARGE battery to facilimitate this operation. Yes….the very same large battery I replaced thinking it was on the way out…..nothing bloody wrong with it, same as the replaced at same time small battery…..airse.
All Jaguar 3.0 and 5.0 petrol engines and 3.0 diesel engines have this facility to suction extract the oil. I have just changed the oil on my XKR (5.0 supercharged) using this method. The oil extraction tube on the 5.0 V8 is under the oil filler cap.

I didn't know about the petrol engines. If people could PM me photos of the extraction tubes for the 5-litre and 3-litre engines, I'll add an addendum to the how-to and edit the thread title.
This is a great post, thanks to the OP. I am planning a service on my newly acquired XF 2.2D in the coming weeks and will definitely use this pump method - I am getting a little too old for lying on my back underneath the car, in the cold, fighting with the undertray!
One thought though, it is recommended practice when draining the oil from the sump to replace the drain plug as the rubber grommet/washer degrades. What are peoples thoughts on how often this should done, as it will need a traditional oil change every once in a while?
Yeah I know but I would still do an sump change every 3rd oil change . Whilst I appreciate the top extraction method, I was always thought it prudent in case any crud etc had collected at bottom of sump. I know it’s unlikely but thought it best practice and makes me sleep better.

The position of the sump plug doesn't allow full draining of the sump, there's a good half inch of height below the plug point that is left.ore likely to get it via suction, or going in through the sump plug hole
Hello, quick question; On a 2012 3.0d, where does the oil extraction tube go down to in the sump? It's a separate pipe off to the side, and looking at the workshop manual for the 2010/11 manual I can't see it poking out from the block or near it:
Does anyone have a picture of the 2012 engine, if that's different, or more simply, where is it?
