The locking rear diff was optional on the TDV8 and standard fit on the Supercharged.

I don’t know if I snapped it or if it was hanging on for dear life already but I’m glad I saw it rather then having to tear it all back down to get in there when it was all back together!

At least you spotted it now, however it broke. Be a right pain if after reassembly at start up to get a MIL and code to say faulty MAF.

Indeed. Especially with it being right down the back.

I’m hopeful that tomorrow it might be out of the workshop and finished :)

MOT by the end of the week if everything goes to plan! 🤞

16th January 2021

It's been a productive day today.

The new water pump is fitted with it's new gasket.

The new thermostat is fitted, unfortunately, someone has been in there before and as the old seal was flat they sealed it with instant gasket. I've scraped it all off, replaced the thermostat and have emailed the dealer who sponsor the Range Rover forum to order a new thermostat seal.

The new auxiliary belt and supercharger belt have been refitted with the pulleys after the new bearings were fitted.

All of the coils have been changed and I've done the Supercharger oil as well.

The old oil was pretty filthy coming out.

Old vs New

New oil going in.

Looking at the above, I'd like to change the oil in the Supercharger on my XFR but the plug is at the back and can't be done with the Supercharger in situ I don't believe :(

Once the thermostat seal has arrived I can get the cooling system filled back up and bled, then I can warm the engine up and change the engine oil and filter, and do the gearbox service as the oil needs warming up to do the level.

David.
David,
Apparently it is possible to change the SC oil on the 5.0 without having to remove the SC, a poster on the Yank forum named George05 has done it, start here: DIY supercharge oil change - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
But it also seems that you need to be a 90 lb contortionist to do it!

Thanks for that! My SC coupler needs to be replaced so I was going to ask the specialist to do it whilst the charger was off but they're adamant they can do the coupler with the charger in situ. I'll have another word and see what they say.

Update on the Range Rover...

It looks like the rear bearings on the charger are definitely knackered. Most of the notable wear is on the rear of the rotors next to the needle bearings that are part of the case. Powerhouse have given me a few checks to do so that I know for sure what it's worth doing with this charger. If it can be rebuilt, I'll rebuild it and keep it for a spare.

Unfortunately, when I was cleaning the bolts to fit the new Supercharger I noticed that the threads on one of them were shiny. Upon closer inspection, they were full of aluminium. The steel bolts have been in the aluminium block for 13 years and decided to bring the threads out with it. I cleaned the bolt up and it went back into the hole in the block by hand but when I went to nip it, the bugger just became loose.

At this point I'd had enough and couldn't be bothered to get the helicoil kit out so that's a job for one evening this week.

The hole is repaired with a Wurth time-sert rather then a helicoil as they seemed to get better reviews. Just waiting for the last 2 parts I’ve ordered to turn up and this will hopefully all be back together at the weekend.

It’s been a productive if slightly frustrating weekend unfortunately.

The replacement Supercharger was fitted, new seals were put on the coolant manifold, the cooling system was filled up and I started the car. I was gutted to hear that the replacement Supercharger I’ve bought has got the exact same noise as the old one. It’s disappointing as I was assured it was a good one. It does however have a 6 month warranty on it. I’m happy to keep it if the price is adjusted as it’ll let me use the car whilst I send my old one off for rebuilding.

The fan shroud on the car is broken so I need to order a new one of them but it is back together now. The engine cover is damaged so I’m tempted to look for one of them too.

I then had to top up the oil in the gearbox and set the level. It must have been low as after draining it, doing the solenoids and seals and reassembly it took 8.2 litres of Lifeguard 6. Whilst I waited for the gearbox oil to come up to temperature I got my Snap On polishing tool out and cleaned the exhaust tips. They’re better but still not perfect. I’ll have another go atthem at some point.

I then fitted the new grill, put my number plate on it and once I’d set the gearbox oil level I reset the gearbox adaptations. Fingers crossed I don’t regret doing the adaptions.

I was going to get it out of the workshop this afternoon but decided to change the tow bar wiring loom to 13 pin whilst the car was inside.

I’ll get it outside one evening this week and hopefully will get it MOT’d this week too before giving it a proper wash next weekend as it is filthy.

David.

Bit of a shame about the supercharger, how much is a rebuild?

If my rotor pack bearings are intact then 3-400 quid. If they’re not (which I suspect to be the case) then 6-700 quid.

I’d probably get them to fit a 10% pulley on it whilst they had it too so probably around a grand.

Run it for a month on the sc you’ve just fitted, get the original one refurbed, then exchange them and send the one you bought back

The SC is back together and is out of the garage now.

The fan shroud was broken so I need to order one up. I don’t want to leave it off as it’s obviously there for a reason.

I wanted to give it a wash today but it’s been between -1 and -3 all day and the outside taps were frozen.

I’ve not been far with it today but the gearbox on it is absolutely perfect. I was worried that after resetting the adaptions it might drive horribly for a few miles but it’s been silky smooth from the get go today. Up and down the box was like silk and when kicking it down it was perfect.

Jobs left to do:

Wheels refurbished back to silver.
Remove chrome side vents and fit standard ones.
Fix reversing camera.

Other then that, she’s driving spot on.

It’s definitely a Supercharged one I’ve bought...

David.

You'll be fine without a shroud in winter.

But--------kickdown should not be used while the gearbox is relearning its adaptions - say 200 miles or so.

Might need to go for essential shoping to Tesco in Dundee 😁

I’ve just found another one on eBay but in a Sport this time so I’m trying to talk the wife into a Supercharged daily.

Bugger.

I went to refit the viscous fan this evening and found that it wouldn’t go onto the mounting.

I removed the mounting from the car and noticed that one has NA written on it, one has SC written on it. Looking a bit closer, one has a left hand thread, one doesn’t. 😩

Last time I tried to split the old one to replace the bearings, with the press at full pressure it wouldn’t budge so that rules out being able to swap the front part over.

Looking back through emails, it was me who requested the dealer order me the wrong part and as I’ve fitted it I can’t return it. Annoyingly the part number is 1 digit different. That was a 100 quid mistake I won’t make twice!

The tow bar on the car was pretty crusty and hadn’t had the bung in it so the removable bit wouldn’t fit into the receiver. I got it back from being blasted today which has tidied it up nicely.

I gave it a couple of coats of Hammerite black spray paint tonight. You won’t see any of it but the round receiver when it’s fitted but at least it’ll look much tidier on the back of the car too.

David.

Easily done David.. but a Bugger!! nonetheless..

Few more jobs done today...

The reversing camera was intermittent and had a black line scrolling up and down it so I ordered a replacement from PowerfulUK.

Before

After

Whilst I had the spoiler off the car I noticed the high level brake light was faded and hazy so I wet sanded, polished and sealed it with a UV protector so that looks better now.

I noticed whilst doing the camera that the rear screen washer wasn’t working. I removed the motor and cleared it with the airline which cured the not working fault. However, it was leaking badly into the boot. Thanks to a guide on full fatrr.com, I’ve ordered the seal to rebuild it. Hopefully it’s here soon.

I then moved onto the badges. The Supercharged one was a cheap chrome one that looked horrible so a replacement was fitted. They retail at nearly 80 quid! Thankfully I managed to get a genuine one on eBay for 15 quid. The LR logo was badly delaminating and the lettering was looking a bit tired too so I replaced them all. A genuine LR oval was around 8 quid. I decided I didn’t want the Brunel badges as I prefer the more modern look of titan silver :)

The lettering that was on the bonnet had previously been chrome as well. It had started to delaminate and most of it was just yellow plastic so I replaced them too.

The tow bar receiver has had a couple more coats of paint so can be refitted tomorrow and then I just need the fan shroud to arrive and then we can get an MOT on her.

David.
