Still only a proposal though. What if the current government aren't in power close to 2030? Oh, yes, they won't be, so it'll be down to a successive government to pass a new law outlawing new ICE cars/vans etc, if they believe there is a need to do so. Unless the current lot decide to draw it up, debate and pass a new law banning ICE in 2030. Can't see them doing that though. The industry will self-regulate itself I expect, new tech will also come along too no doubt. But there is confusion, pretty much anyone now says ICE cars will be banned in 2030, no, not unless a law is passed. Not that it'll affect me, I buy used.

I can imagine pound upon pound being packed out with thousands of ICE cars, all pre registered.

Or maybe the government that is in power and decides that Jo Public needs get away from ICE and go EV, they'll not ban ICE but tax it to non-existence, by quadrupling road tax and fuel duties..... Which would be much simpler to get passed through parliament - as it won't need a vote.

According to the BBC this was the situation last Tuesday.
"As renewables failed to supply enough energy, the United Kingdom was forced to use its emergency coal-fired backup generators for the first time.
Britain’s crusade for net zero failed again on Tuesday, with the country forced to use its emergency coal-fired power plants because renewables were unable to meet demand.
In recent years, the country has been focused on shifting away from burning fossil fuels and towards green energy sources, with the country struggling to keep the lights on at times due to its Conservative Party government’s green agenda.
However, as it has become clear that Britain’s new sources of power cannot keep up with the old, the country has kept some coal-burning power plants operational and in reserve, ready to start supplying power to the energy grid should the more environmentally friendly sources fail.
According to the BBC, such a last resort had to be used, with two of the plants supplying energy to Britons once more after green energy facilities failed to perform.
Yesterday, five separate coal-fired power plants were put on standby, with two of them required to keep the energy grid stable.
The use of the power plants is a new low for the Conservative Party’s green energy agenda, a project that has cost ordinary Britons a significant amount of money and the country much of its energy security in the last year.
Despite nearly unanimous support from senior Conservatives in government, renewables in Britain have proven unable to replace fossil fuel-burning methods of energy generation."
:)
Actually the system worked very well & the back-up generators did exactly what they're supposed to do... back-up. If you'd looked a bit more closely at the figures (the BBC didn't), you'd have seen that the coal fired generation almost exactly matched the export to France during that period. The headline could easily have been " The UK keeps the lights on in France".

The amount of renewable generation you would have to install to keep the lights on all the time without any back-up wouldn't be viable so we will always need back-up generation & peaker plants in addition to storage. Renewables currently account for over 35% of the UK's generation & this figure will rise to over 60% rapidly unless the idiots in Whitehall make a complete bullocks of it. Add a few SMRs into the future mix & we should soon reach a point where all the back-up is gas & hydrogen with coal consigned to history.

Ah, but Starmer says he will eliminate fossil-fueled leccy generation in 5 years! He has a magic plan, obviously.

I get that we need to work towards sustainability, but why are they all in such a mad rush? It's feels like they all believe the world is about to blow up or something.
Now that Iran has nigh on weapon's grade uranium.....let's see.

I believe I said that would not happen a while back................ :D

In fact, I believe he will redefine gas as most certainly NOT a fossil fuel. Oh no.

It'll be funded by a windfall tax on Rishi Sunak's wife.
