Hi guys

Not so bright on this subject and I cannot find anything in the handbook about this.

Could anyone more savvy than me tell me what SIM card I need (micro etc) and what uses I can make of it generally, I realize I can use it as a hotspot for phones etc but a little baffled as to what else

Thanks in advance

Assuming you have InControl Touch Pro, it also supplies the data connection for:

* Live traffic
* Streetview of destinations in nav
* Emailing for satnav arrival times to contacts.
* Web browsing
* Live news/weather
* Data connections for applications like Spotify.

It's not needed for anything relating to remote start/car status, or sending nav directions to your car from your phone/web.

Oh, and it's a micro sim card, the tiniest type.

Just a heads up, the smallest sim available is the nano sim.

Ok thanks for info, don't have touch pro so maybe not a real benefit to me then

If you don't have Touch Pro, then there is no way of fitting a sim.

Unless you want to create a wifi hot spot, in which case it's in the boot :)

If I follow this correctly, I could use my works phone as a hotspot and not have to shell out for PAYG or contract sim.
Correct?

Yep. Although, unless you intend streaming Spotify, it uses so little data it?s worth putting a cheap PAYG sim in. I got a 24gb Three morning be for about 15 quid on offer from Amazon a year ago, and even using live traffic all the time, Streetview, etc I?ve used less than 1gb.

It?s vastly more convenient to fit and forget.

That's another decision made...many thanks to both you and Gav for the responses.

just trawling through old posts ( changing my SIM and I've had the car 12 months now) and I'm trying to work out how on earth I use a Gb a month??
I dont use Spotfify but do have streetview, traffic and weather on.

Images of destination eats little kB.
The google map view roughly uses 5/6 mb of data per hour of navigation.
It makes roughly 200 hours of navigation er month. Do use it this much?

I would say no more than 40hrs a month.
It does seem to eat a lot of data.

IF my phone would tether to the system a tad quicker, then I would use the wifi hotspot.

That said, I do have the wifi hotspot on in the car all the time.

BUT it's not open to all.

if only it was that simple.
the sim carrier is a real bag of nails, it also doesnt like 'tri' cards ( that is nano, micro and standard, where you pop out the required card).
it 'locates' by the use of a tool. that is anything slightly longer than a normal man's thumbnail.
i've found that with IOS12, for whatever reason, the phon'es hotspot connects with the car very quickly.
I'm likely to use that when the current sim expires this month.
