A while back the shear bolt incorporated into the bonnet hinge on the right side (drivers side in UK) sheared leaving the hinge opened as it is would be if the passenger protection system had activated.
When this happens the rear of the bonnet under the windscreen raises up 1/2 inch or so. As a temporary fix a number of cable ties wrapped round the hinge can hold it somewhat closed.
It appears that a replacement bolt cannot be sourced from Jaguar and they will only supply a replacement hinge at standard stealership prices (Though according to Jayf, see below, they are only £42 + VAT). However ebay is your friend and I managed to get one for only £25 + £5 p&p.
Mine was new I think but was never used by the seller so came unpainted. Obviously try to obtain one from same colour car if you can. I primed and sprayed with paint] bought onebay UK (from thescratchdotor - No association), seemed a good colour match to my untrained eye.
This is how I replaced the hinge. Bear in mid this was on the right hand side and so I am not sure if the access is the same on the other side though it does look similar.
Firstly - Put rag at end of bonnet where it meets A pillar to protect paint (I managed to chip it).
1. Support bonnet open with something (I wedged in a broom] handle).
2. Remove plastic nut from upper nuts.
3. Remove drivers side wiper. (Prise off plastic cover, undo 13mm nut with long socket, wiggle and yank on wiper arm to free off, disconnect connector on body).
4. Removed fuse box cove
5.Lift plastic cove that runs width of car belowwindscreen. (I didn't bother to remove the whole thing as I could access underneath ok).
6. Free'd off all 4 hinge a quarter turn just to make sure I could access them all. Think they were 12mm but might have been 13.
6. Undid & removed aft-most lower bolt with short socket extension. (Was very careful not to drop bolt when extracting cause it looked like a nightmare to retrieve).
7. Undid & removed aft-most upper bolt
8. Undid & removed forward upper bolt
9. Undid & removed forward lower bolt
10. Remove broken hinge
11. Inserted new hinge
12. Inserted and tightened but left loose forward lower bolt
13. Inserted and tightened but left loose rear lowerbolt, again being careful not to drop.
14. Inserted and tightened but left loose rear upperbolt
15. Inserted and tightened but left loose forward upperbolt
17. There is a little play to enable alignment of bonnet and it took 5-10 minutes wiggling the bonnet & hinge, loosening & tightening the nuts to get it aligned correctly.
18. Replace upper hinge nut covers
19. Refit wipe arm, not forgetting to plug washer hose back onto connecto & refit plastic cover
20. Refit fuse box cover
21. Job done.
