Hi, it is known for the heat shield above the exhaust to come loose, maybe your problem. Phil

You're gonna have to get under it and look. Hopefully it's an exhaust shield. But of course it could well be a cracked flex plate, though I don't think I've heard of that on an XF. Always a first though. If the rattle is constant at idle, it should be simple to locate.

Hello John , It has done 84000 miles and I dont think someone ever change the fluid .
Although Jaguar say the gearbox (which includes the torque converter) is sealed for life, it really isn't and the concensus is that the oil/fluid should be changed at around the mileage yours has done.
That said, many don't do this and I've never heard of an XF transmission failing. If I were you, I'd get the gearbox oil changed at a good Jag indy or a "ZF" (gearbox manufacturer) service centre and see if that cures it.

The torgue converter is failing is broken some metal inside and the noise is very loud, do you think the oil change it will fix it?

No, not if it's that bad.
Again, this is the first instance of a failed torque converter I've ever heard about.
Has there been any effect on the performance or indeed, normal operation of the car?

I've a similar rattle idle, but it sounds more like the exhaust on mine.
There are dampers on the exhaust pipe and rear box, has he checked them for wear?

Also the rear gearbox mount is also a weak item, like the engine mounts.
My engine mounts didn't cause any rattles, just excess engine vibration at idle. I changed them and the vibration went, but I think I should have changed the gearbox mount as well.
