Gearbox noise

I have a 2013 xf 3.0 D with 48200 miles on the clock. My question is when at normal operating temp and pull up, say for lights or a queue of traffic and whilst still in 'D' I notice a slight grumbling noise this eases off if I put the car in 'N' or 'P'. I've only just started to notice this noise and was wondering if this is the forebear of a problem with the autobox? By the way I always switch the S/S off and no warnings have appeared on the dash regarding any sort of fault at all.

Hi, after seven years I think I would be looking to get the gearbox fluid and filter changed. Phil

It doesn't sound normal no and if it's going when you put the car in Park or neutral then it's almost certainly gearbox related.

Jaguar suggest the gearbox is sealed for life and doesn't require any maintenance. The people who make the gearboxes say differently... 60k miles is standard, less for "arduous" conditions.

I know who I'd believe!

The only thing turning when stationary in "D" is the impeller of the torque convertor, possibly the stator, too, can't remember. In "P" the gearbox input shaft also turns. Everything else is still.

I also think a fluid and filter change would be a good first step.

You need a Jag dealer, good Jag indy or best, Google "ZF Gearbox service" in your area.
Or if you're happy doing your own servicing etc, you can buy a service kit off eBay which includes the fluid and the sump pan with integral filter.

I realise it's a bit further afield, but E&E Motors in MK get favourably mentioned a lot on various media.

Are sure it’s from gearbox at that milage? There are other things that can make a similar noise. Like a loose exhaust shield, under tray cover, exhaust clamps, pipes, cables, etc. engine, gearbox and exhaust all move a bit when car is stationery and gearbox is engaged compared to have in P or N. If it is the gearbox you might be able to hear it other scenarios.
Before touching the box, I suggest to have someone in the car in D and check underneath the car for noises. Move exhaust or underbody covers and see if the noise eases. I had a noise that seemed to be knocking from engine but having a closer look, it was a loose exhaust shield.
noise sound totally different when get to cabin through the insulation. I would double check the interior trim as well.

I phoned Farriers this morning at 08.30 approx , I asked to speak to the service dept the lady who answered the phone said that I had to tell her what my enquiry was , she seemed very vague. She explained that the service manager was in the workshop at that time as they are short staffed, but she assured me that I would get a phone call from this guy when he could manage it.Seing the service chappie on Monday morning (15-6)

Yup - a small business, they only do servicing/repairs, not car sales, the lynchpin is the guy (Jeremy) you need to speak to, the lady there is really only a bookeeper I believe.

The guy (Jeremy) road tested it for me and found no faults at all, but explained that if it was (is) an intermittent fault then to bring it to them straight away and they'll look further into it. Obviously a well genned up fella , he spent about a good twenty minutes on my car and never charged me a bean, I will certainly use them again.

Glad you had a good experience there, they are a good indy IMHO.

I take the current Mrs Wilf's Ewok there for work I don't want to do on it............(which is most of it).
