Door locks....not unlocking with fob.

I've just managed to repair my rear door lock on my 2013 XF by installing some new motors (advertised as Land Rover door lock motors) which I purchased from a well-known auction site for around £18 (varies due to exchange rate).
The door would not unlock with the fob. It would unlock with the keyless entry.
I did try to test it by following the process in the workshop manual, but this did not really pinpoint the issue. As it seemed to work some of the time, I assumed the motor was at fault.
Although it's a bit of a fiddle to remove the lock, remove the plastic cover and associated bits, the replacement motors just clip in. Just a case of refitting everthing...and hey presto everything works again. Took me about 3 hours, but it rained which slowed me down a bit and I had some lunch as well. Certainly worth it to save some money as new locks are around £150 or more (most places want more!).

Hi, you can buy doors locks with a 5 year warranty for about £55 on eBay, no need to pay the JAT (Jaguar Added Tax). Phil

Yes, I was aware of them although they are not quite as good as the OE parts. The plastic case is a bit poorer and more brittle. I did buy one for a Land Rover a while ago and it did work ok. Thought I'd try the motor route. Just have to wait for about ten days for them to arrive from China. I'm a bit surprised the lock had broken as the car has less than 50k on it!

I beg to differ regarding quality, I've fitted three of these cheap aftermarket locks - with 5yr warranty to my daughters Evoque (just waiting for the drivers door lock to fail now) and I did what you did with the first lock - took it to bits- the two little motors fail because the brushes in them are springy steel with graphite sprayed on them, so not a proper carbon brush and the coating wears through quickly so the steel comes into contact with the commutator and compromises the conductivity - so reduced torque and eventual fail.
The motors were available online but cost wise they were pretty close to the cost of a full aftermarket lock and fitting them means you have no warranty, looking at both the pattern part and the genuine I couldn't see any difference at all, felt the same, same thickness plastic and even same springs - once fitted they just work - and none of them has failed to date.

I thought the job was a doddle and the only fiddly bit was re-attaching the cable from the outer handle to the lock - through the hole where the lock is bolted to the door.

The Land Rover locks are not quite the same as the Jaguar (the handle arrangement is different) and are probably slightly easier to install. The aftermarket lock mechanisms are quite good, but on close inspection you can tell that they aren't quite up to OE standard, but the one I replaced did the job.
Just remembered that the aftermarket lock I ordered had been damaged in the post (plastic cover had broken) so I swapped over the cover from the original although it didn't quite fit due to the slight differences.....this is when I realised that the plastic is quite brittle on the aftermarket part. Think I managed to alter the original to fit well enough to work. The packaging around the part was pretty poor (just in the box without any padding) which I think why it had been damaged in the post.
I did get the work done at a local garage actually, but when I collected it they had forgotten to thread the door lock cable back in (I'd taken the panel off at home) so I had to wait while he did that.
