From time to time there is an offer on groupon that you could use at ATS. It’s £35.99 for recharge. They say they won’t do a nitrogen test. Just vacuum and top up. Also normally you have to book a few weeks in advance.

KwikFit had an offer on aircon recharge a few years ago: If we can't get it colder, we won't charge you. I duly booked my car in, and they recharged my system. When they called me from the waiting room they said it's icy cold now, that'll be £69 please. I asked what were the measured temperatures, they replied they hadn't taken any. So I said with no proof my car is any colder, they can't charge me, as per their offer! I then drove away unchallenged!

I have also used the disposable can DIY recharge kits many times now an various cars. Use the gauge with the valve closed, no can attached to check the gas pressure. If refrigerant is needed, disconnect the gauge, connect a can then recharge. There's also sealant cans that can be used in the same way if there's a very small leak, again I've used these with positive results.

I had a Panda 100hp air con topped up to the 'correct pressure' by Halfords but it still whistled when it kicked in. The trusted air con specialist advises that's not an accurate way to recharge as it was less than 50% capacity when vacced out & weighed.
Not saying don't try, just saying be aware.

I had a tyre place do a vacuum and recharge on a previous car. They had a trolley system that apparently did it all automatically including measured oil addition. It may have not worked properly as after a few hundred miles the compressor seized and had to be expensively replaced.
I would tend to go to a specialist aircon place now.

I phoned ATS before Kwik Fit as they are a bit closer but they were booking 10 days hence. I wouldn't have waited even with this discount voucher. It was/is a 3-day wait at Kwik Fit.

Oh dear, this sounds ominous. Was it Kwik Fit by any chance?

On their first recharge attempt, the trolley system returned an oil inject error.
The operator came a couple of minutes later and then cleared the error and the recharge continued.
I'm not sure how he cleared the fault - either by cancelling or bypassing the oil inject stage.

On the second recharge attempt, the system went straight through with no errors.
Whether the oil inject worked properly, or the stage was bypassed I don't know but am now getting nervous. I did ask for a print out but he only gave me a print of the first attempt stating that the second print would show the same amount of gas going out and back in so was pointless.

The fact that they refused any payment from me also, maybe trying to absolve themselves from any liability? Only time will tell.

I had tracking done at kwik fit and tyre replacement. I had to visit them 3 times until they could get it right. I won’t go there but aircon regas is fully automated machine. I don’t understand how they could do it wrong other than they used contaminated oil from previous car and that ended up in your car. I use formula one for aircon regas and never had issue. I got this ATS voucher but haven’t used it yet due to waiting time.

The operator has to tell the machine what make and model car it's connected to.

My issue wasn't Kwik Fit, but an independent. I use ATS for tyres and find them well equipped and professional, might give them a shot when I need a recharge if I can't find a local specialist.

So, sitting at Kwik Fit waiting for my turn on the machine. Been told the Insignia in front of me is taking longer than it should. "Would you like to leave it with us, sir?".
No I f'king wouldn't, I said more diplomatically than that.

Well . . . . drum roll . . . .

No! Not fixed. And to Kwik Fit's credit, I already have the full refund back in my PayPal account.
So, what next? I called Lister's, Droitwich and have it booked it for diagnosis/repair on . . . . 24th August! All down to their techs self-isolating apparently and causing a backlog of work. But it was reassuring to hear the girl on the other end confirm it is under warranty with no prompting from me.
Anyway, it's not a huge issue as it still blasts icy-cold air when moving and it looks as though our summer is all done now.

Be interesting to find out what the problem was. They don't build them like they used to.
On a brighter note per the Met office, high pressure is due to return to the UK mid-August so there might well be a summer renaissance. Not sure I believe them though, lol

Yup, I think so. I'm thinking I might try and get to it, disconnect the plug and wack it with a rubber mallet. You know, on the premise that it's just stuck.
