Just about to change the diff oil as I don’t think it’s ever been done on a 2011 3.0D with 105k I’ve ordered the oil “Castrol Transmax Universal LL 75W-90” but before I start I wanted to check I could remove the fill plug and noticed what appears to be thread sealant on it. The question is do the full and drain plugs need thread sealant and if so which type?

Shouldn't need thread sealant, they're a taper pipe thread so essentially bind up and so seal as they're tightened. I didn't use any sealant on mine when I changed the diff oil, the workshop manual makes no mention of sealant either. Check the workshop manual as to the amount of fluid, some diffs the fill hole is NOT the level hole, filling to overflow will be too much fluid. I can't recall on the X250 3.0D diff now. You're correct to remove the fill plug first, be a right PITA to drain the fluid then find you can't get the fill plug out.

No thread lock on mine either when I changed the fluid. You'll need a big syringe or fluid pump though.

Sorry, should have said I also didn't use/have any thread lock on either of the plugs.

Carl - Seeing as no one else has either from the comments above, perhaps that means yours has previously been done at some point?

Quite possibly although there is no mention of it in any of the paperwork car has full dealer history except the last two which where independent specialist. However seen as no one else has needed to use thread sealant I will just change the fluid and keep an eye for any seepage. Oil and syringe should be here this afternoon

If it has been done previously, it most likely wouldn't have been done at the dealer as they consider it sealed for life.

Mine was done at around half the mileage you've done so can't really comment on the oil and build-up on the plug.

If you're worries about contamination, then a couple of turns of PTFE tape on the threads should be fine. Like has been said though, it shouldn't really need it.
