Coolant leaking from rear of engine

258 Views 16 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  cutlea01
Hiya, I am losing around 2ltr of coolant per day driving aprox 30 miles
The leak is from the lower near side of the engine and drips off the gearbox
I have stripped down all the top covers and see no coolant from above
Does the XF 2.7 D have a gearbox cooling system on it as the coolant looks to be coming from a join between the engine and gearbox???
Any info would be awesome
thanks
Leigh

Please see pics below as one shows coolant dripping from around the gearbox and the other shows everything dry from above ??
Been trying to find this leak for an age and do not want to use a sealant but as a last resort might have to

Pressurise the coolant system while cold and trace the leak. You'll of course need a coolant pressurisation kit, Ebay, Amazon etc.
Done.
Still haven't found source?

you don't need to purchase a cold pressure kit as its easy to make your own one at the cost of a quid or less eh
is everyone selling stuff or does anybody know what the problem might be :rolleyes:o_O
Oh give over mate. We're making suggestions to help you. A cold pressure kit is a few quid and easier to buy than make. You have an expansion bottle cap spare you can drill, a pump, unions, hoses, one way valve etc all laying about. If you think you know better then go fix your car and stop asking us.

OOOOEEERRRRR just giving out a tip eh
on the expansion bottle, you have a screw valve on the L/H side that will accept a car tyre valve trimmed down to enable you to pressurize the water system even with a bicycle pump to locate a cold coolant leak
I am asking a genuine question about a leak on my awesome XF Lux Prem and if I cant give tips then what you hear for

My apology for sounding abrupt but we are here to help each other eh and this leak is throwing me big time sorry
Can I suggest that just because the coolant happens to be dripping off the gearbox it doesn't necessarily mean that the leak is at the back of the engine. That could be just the easiest route from a leak further forward.
Check the expansion tank as these can apparently leak.
The EGR's are water cooled, so worth a look in that area.
A cold pressure test doesn't always show the leak location, I've had experience where only a hot engine under pressure would leak, at a gasket joint on one, another the heat would make a cracked plastic component expand and then leak. The rear water outlet connector could still be the source of the leak, being changed 2 years ago is irrelevant.
