About 3 weeks ago, with some friends, drove out to New Forest to a beauty spot. Beautiful day.
After about 1 hour we drove off heading for Lymington.
A few minutes later the car 'died'. Screens went black. Seemed I could steer but nothing else.
Screen flickered briefly which had the effect of putting the gear knob into neutral with a jolt.

After a couple of minutes screen came to life and I could start the car. During the wait I did nothing - could
do nothing.
About 10mins. later same thing happened. No warning, Black screens . Dead. Flicker, jolt into neutral then black screens.

I had a somewhat stressful journey home.

After lots of forum reading I guessed the most likely culprit was the battery.
It's the original 4 years old battery and even after smart charge resting voltage was only 12.2v - 12.3v
So 2 weeks ago got Halfords to fit new battery (拢186 + fitting). No faults showing now. Car drives with no apparent problem.
Old battery, now on garage floor, is now showing 12.7v.
I am worried !
What do you think could have caused the original fault ?
Will it reappear ?
Anyone want to buy a 4 yrs. old original battery ? :)

sounds to me like total loss of power and whilst you can get faulty batteries it鈥檚 usually a faulty cell and not all the same time. I can only think the negative on to body work is loose or bad connection etc or more serious the bcm is faulty

Thanks for your thoughts, Gav.
Hope it's not the bcm. :(

Without charging? You have a drain on the battery.

the battery.
Think you may be right.
Just started car to check alternator.. got 14.62v at battery.?
Switched off then switched on without starting and got message. ' Start engine within 5 mins. Low battery' or something like that.
I am worried that Jag. Dealer will struggle to find the fault.
Maybe I should follow my own advice and get an auto-electrician to look.

The original fault was worse than
' Restricted performance'.. just a complete shutdown. If this happened on a motorway the chances are that I would get hit.
Next check is the body earth connection.
If that seems OK then bcm is next.
I wonder how much they cost?

Gawd, how I hate these types of intermittent faults.

Charging/alternator is OK.

Amen to that. You end up second guessing everything and replacing good parts. Had this on an MB once. Bought digital meter that could read down to milliamps with a clamp on lead and put it around the positive battery cable at the battery. 1 amp draw with everything at rest! Pulled fuses for different functions until I found the culprit when the current dropped down to normal (350 milliamps??, can't remember). Seat module bad. Replacements failed after short time. Rerouted module ground circuit to fix problem with advise from forum. If I drove the car every day the problem didn't show because the alternator could keep up with the drain.

I think I must have something like that.
Just went out to car. Car started instantly. Switched off then switched on without starting engine.
Immediately warning--'Low battery. Start engine or system will shut down in 3 minutes.
Switched off. Checked voltage of my new battery in boot. 11.97v...ffs
So it's back on with the smart charger set for AMG.
Hendy, Christchurch can't book me in until 10th August.. no courtesy car.
August 24th if I want courtesy car.

I'm stuffed.

:( Won't hurt to try fixing it yourself until then. After battery is charged check the voltage using the jump start points under the hood and leave the meter attached. Check it at intervals to see if it's dropping. If so pull the three big fuses (40A) in the box next to the jump start terminals (leave the relays) one at a time. One may cause it to stop dropping and give a hint what circuit (if any) is faulty and track from there. Worst that can happen is you'll maybe have to reset seat/mirror/radio settings. Good luck. From what I've read on the forums people have experienced corrosion in different junction boxes.

Yes, " What can possibly go wrong" :)
The hardest part is trying to make sure the car has completely gone to sleep.
After trying different checks, I suddenly remembered a fault some time ago with my dash-cam connection causing an alarm like the seat-belt warning.
I disconnected it and fully charged the battery.
24 hrs later still reading 12.7v.
Maybe this it. My very own parasitic battery drain. :)
Gawd knows why I didn't think of it before.
Maybe a bit early to rejoice and I am down 拢231 for a new battery.

Thanks for the advice. 馃憤
I'll post again if anything new comes up.
