Connect a slave battery when replacing, you could use the new aux battery, replace the main battery then install the new aux battery. Do a search plenty on here about problems changing battery on a facelift.

Why not leave it in place and disconnect the negative lead then there is no danger of the positive lead touching anything because it is still connected to the aux battery that no longer has a negative lead attached.
