Puddle lights

Having changed over some interior bulbs to LED's I moved my attention to the puddle lights at the bottom of the door mirrors. Despite my efforts I can't get mine to light up. Do they work on a pre facelift MY2011?

This is from the workshop manual . . .

Never done it but as I understand it, the mirror glass comes out merely to allow access to the plastic tab holding in the plastic lens and bulb holder. You use a small screwdriver to press and unclip the tab. But previous FMs have said this can be brittle and will readily snap off so it's a good idea to warm up the assembly first with a hair dryer.

Once the mirror glass it out you can see the small horizontal slot on the inside of the mirror at the bottom. Put a small flat screwdriver in there you prise the tab that holds the lamp holder in place.

Stevie, yes I am :). I can't stand the default ones.

This for boot: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201687385...49&var=501443001104&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT - on the way
These for footlights: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252883480350?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT - on the way
These for interior -back & front - and mirrors underneath: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252575113828?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT (I hope I'll put them in the mirrors tomorrow - interior done)

On the other side, here's a new one for you (sorry to keep asking!): since actual exhaust sounds awesome inside, like a proper V6, it's not as loud when and how I want. So, is there any chance to have something louder (like in the following video) but only, let's say, after 5000rpm, and up to 5000 to be a silent as it is now? Ho are Quicksilver XFR Sports exhaust system?

Will the below ones fit properly for my Xf 3.0 V6 Petrol?

About your exhaust noise question.
Quicksilver or Spires etc which are designed for the V8 will probably fit your V6 but would need at least a pair of "adapter tubes" for the pipe joins, as I think the exhaust pipe diameter of the V6 is a little bit smaller than the V8. The hanger brackets and/or rubbers might also be different, so it might not be a simple DIY job.
These systems will be louder at all revs and not just over 5,000 rpm, although from all reports they are still reasonably quiet at idle and cruise.
If you want some sort of "loudness switch" then you have two choices - standard XFR back boxes/mufflers or a Varex system.
The XFR mufflers are purely mechanical, with valves that open once sufficient exhaust gas pressure is reached, which can be as low as 2,500 rpm.
The Varex system is electronic, you control it with a switch, but it is quite expensive and not a DIY job. It also tends to be pretty much "on or off", ie when off it's very quiet and when on it's very loud.

Thanks a lot mate! Really appreciate it
Now, what do you suggest, to go ahead with

and get rid of Varex system, which doesn't sound something which worth doing...
Any links for XFR mufflers?

In terms of wing mirrors lights, looking at the workshop (same as John's pics), that's what I've tried to do, but nothing happens (and I was pushing hard enough the screwdriver - as per first picture fom 1st attachment). Do I have to use a hair dryer?

Stock XFR mufflers come up from time to time on eBay or on this forum, search and ye shall find (maybe!).

Yep, they are both genuine XFR back boxes.

So for http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-XFR-Exhaust-/172635931274?clk_rvr_id=1204989650145&rmvSB=true is more like a DIY job/straight forward, or does it require any adjustments? The price sounds very good too :), even if it's an auction.

Or even better: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-XF...555987?hash=item1c7dacb993:g:QYEAAOSwax5YrYvA

Or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XFR-exhau...498586?hash=item3ae09d269a:g:MsEAAOSwB-1Yz-6~

And btw, the insurrance will be affected as well? Since, in the end, it's just a matter of noise only...

The second one seems the best to me, as that's a set price and the other two are just auction starting prices, and the second ones look cleaner and better presented as well. The big unknown is postage or collection costs, depending on how far from you they are and whether you are willing to travel to collect them.
A few on this forum have fitted XFR back boxes to 3.0 diesel XFs, they would be able to give you some pointers, I think the only issue with them was the need for a pair of short lengths of adapter tubing. However I'm not aware of anyone fitting these to a V6 petrol XF or what problems that might entail.

I'm led (excuse the pun) to believe that the LED replacements in the puddle lights should be of a canbus variety. Is this correct?

When I changed mine I just got some new bulb holders (10 each) and just broke the old ones to get them out. It's sometimes more hassle than its worth trying to remove the mirror glass, especially when you've got BSM like some of us do.

Hi, I believe that canbus makes no difference, I have replaced all the interior and exterior possible and never worried about whether they were canbus or not. Phil

#69 ·
When I changed them in my last XF (2009) they weren't canbus and had no issues. Is there any lights on the XF which are Canbus ?

#70 ·
To my knowledge no there aren't, that's why you never get a warning if a bulb has failed. Phil

@Phil1, I replaced my puddle lights over 5 years ago with no issues.

Time to change the mirror lights again. On my old car I simply pried them out from below and broke a retaining tab on each of them. Thinking about doing it properly this time by pulling out the mirror but despite the extract from the workshop manual it's a bit unclear to me.

I get that you should adjust the mirror to get its outer edge as far out as possible, but then what? That is, in which direction do you pull the mirror glass? Just put your fingers behind it pull it off, or slide it sideways somehow?

Done the proper way this time. Didn't bother with disconnecting the mirrors, just fastened them a bit up with tape, so that I could access the slot at the bottom of the housing. In my case it seemed impossible to get the lamp holders out by just pushing the clip in the slot - needed to both push a screwdriver into the slot and pry the holder out with another screwdriver from below. Sounded like they cracked when they popped out, but fortunately didn't.

This is what the clips look like, in case it could help anyone else who'll have to struggle with them.

Incredible what a difference LEDs make btw. Had forgotten how useless the standard bulbs are in the mirrors... you really hardly can see that they light up.

Thanks for those pics, they confirm that all four of my clips (2 x XFS and 2 x XFR) had already been broken off before I changed the bulbs!
